St Mary Magdalen, Oxford

Organ

The Matthew Copley Organ

The organ, built by Matthew Copley (see Links,) is arranged over two manuals and pedals, with the console as a 'key desk', with stop buttons rather than traditional stop knobs. The Swell and Pedal Organs are in the south arch; the main pipe display, for the Great Organ in the north arch faces the principal entrance and is visually arresting, with flamed copper for the front pipes and silver and green for the others. The new console and shutters to the Swell and Great are largely made of glass, with glass panels angled to deflect the sound of the Great Organ into the body of the building. Manually controlled shutters allow the organist to adjust sound level in the gallery while the choir is performing. Much of the mechanical action is on view, a feature that has already aroused interest among congregation and visitors.
