fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.
Isaiah 43.1
The Bible is filled throughout—in both Testaments, Old and New—with the language of vocation, of calling. God speaks creation into existence, and a people into being. Abraham is called to leave his home to be a blessing to all peoples, thus beginning a pattern that recurs over and over again: Jacob is called to return to the Promised Land, and Moses likewise is called to lead God’s people home. The prophets—Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel—receive their own summons too. Jesus, of course, then calls the disciples to follow him.
In our Christian Vocations Group, we explore today what it might mean for us—as individuals and as a community—to be called to participate in God’s mission and ministry in the world. We will try to avoid the overly narrow focus on vocations to ordained ministry and the religious life, as well as the overly secularised confusion between vocation and career. We will discern together how to say, with the patriarchs and prophets “Here I am”, and with the Blessed Virgin Mary, “let it be to me according to your word”.
