A Votive Mass is a Mass offered for a particular intention, as distinct from Masses celebrated as part of the Church’s ordinary pattern. It typically refers to Masses said at the request of individuals or families to celebrate or commemorate or otherwise mark some specific occasion. Strictly speaking, Nuptial Masses and Requiem Masses are examples of Votive Masses in this sense, as are Healing Masses (offered on behalf of the sick), Ordination Masses, and a priest’s First Mass. However, Votive Masses can be requested and offered for other intentions too, including significant anniversaries, and to express gratitude or yearning, or indeed grief, in specific cases.

Here at St Mary Magdalen’s, the priest will usually be happy to mention a special intention at any of our regular said masses, but special Votive Masses may also be celebrated, especially on Saturdays. Requests may be made using this form below.
